Terraform Course: What You Learn

What a Terraform course teaches you. Skills, exercises, AWS provisioning, and career benefits of learning Terraform for IaC.

Terraform is the most in-demand Infrastructure as Code skill in DevOps. Here is what a comprehensive Terraform course should teach you and why it matters for your career.

Core Skills You Should Learn

1. HCL Syntax

HashiCorp Configuration Language is how you write Terraform code:

hcl
resource "aws_instance" "web" {
  ami           = var.ami_id
  instance_type = var.instance_type

  tags = {
    Name        = "web-${var.environment}"
    Environment = var.environment
  }
}

A good course teaches you to read and write HCL fluently — resources, data sources, variables, outputs, locals, and expressions.

2. Provider Configuration

Terraform works with every major cloud through providers:

hcl
terraform {
  required_providers {
    aws = {
      source  = "hashicorp/aws"
      version = "~> 5.0"
    }
  }
}

provider "aws" {
  region = "eu-west-1"
}

You should learn AWS (most jobs require it), plus understand how to work with Azure, GCP, and other providers.

3. State Management

State is Terraform's memory of what exists in the real world:

  • Local state: Fine for learning, dangerous for teams
  • Remote state: S3 + DynamoDB for AWS; Terraform Cloud for managed
  • State locking: Prevents two people from modifying infrastructure simultaneously
  • State commands: terraform state list, state show, state mv, state rm

4. Modules

Reusable infrastructure packages:

hcl
module "vpc" {
  source      = "./modules/vpc"
  cidr_block  = "10.0.0.0/16"
  environment = "production"
}

module "web_cluster" {
  source        = "./modules/web-cluster"
  vpc_id        = module.vpc.vpc_id
  subnet_ids    = module.vpc.private_subnet_ids
  instance_count = 3
}

5. CI/CD Integration

Running Terraform in pipelines:

yaml
# Plan on pull request
- run: terraform plan -out=plan.tfplan
# Apply on merge to main
- run: terraform apply plan.tfplan

Hands-On Exercises

A course without labs is just a video playlist. Look for:

  • EC2 instance deployment — the "hello world" of Terraform
  • VPC from scratch — subnets, routing, security groups
  • S3 + CloudFront — static website hosting
  • RDS database — managed PostgreSQL or MySQL
  • EKS cluster — Kubernetes on AWS
  • Multi-environment setup — dev/staging/prod from one codebase

Career Impact

Terraform skills are consistently among the highest-paid DevOps specializations:

RoleAverage Salary (EU)Terraform Required
DevOps Engineer€65-85KVery common
Platform Engineer€75-95KAlmost always
Cloud Architect€85-110KExpected
SRE€70-90KCommon
Infrastructure Engineer€60-80KVery common

Certifications: HashiCorp Terraform Associate (entry-level) and Terraform Engineer (professional) validate your skills for employers.
