Learn Ansible Free: Beginner Guide

Start learning Ansible for free with hands-on examples. Master playbooks, inventory, modules, and roles to automate infrastructure.

Ansible is the most popular agentless automation tool for IT infrastructure. You can learn Ansible free right now — no credit card, no paywall for the first lessons.

Why Learn Ansible?

Ansible solves a fundamental DevOps problem: managing servers at scale without logging into each one manually.

  • Agentless: No software to install on target machines — just SSH
  • Human-readable: YAML playbooks that anyone can understand
  • Idempotent: Run playbooks repeatedly without breaking things
  • Massive ecosystem: 60,000+ modules on Ansible Galaxy

Your First Playbook in 5 Minutes

Install Ansible on Ubuntu:

bash
sudo apt update
sudo apt install ansible -y
ansible --version

Create your inventory file hosts.ini:

ini
[webservers]
192.168.1.10
192.168.1.11

[dbservers]
192.168.1.20

Write your first playbook setup.yml:

yaml
---
- name: Configure web servers
  hosts: webservers
  become: true
  tasks:
    - name: Install Nginx
      apt:
        name: nginx
        state: present
        update_cache: true

    - name: Start Nginx
      service:
        name: nginx
        state: started
        enabled: true

    - name: Deploy index page
      copy:
        content: "<h1>Hello from Ansible!</h1>"
        dest: /var/www/html/index.html

Run it:

bash
ansible-playbook -i hosts.ini setup.yml

That's it. Three tasks, one command, all servers configured identically.

Key Ansible Concepts

Inventory

The inventory defines which machines Ansible manages. You can use static INI/YAML files or dynamic inventory from AWS, Azure, or GCP.

Playbooks

Playbooks define what to do. They are YAML files containing plays, tasks, and handlers organized in a logical sequence.

Modules

Modules are the building blocks — apt, yum, copy, service, template, docker_container, and thousands more. Each module handles one type of action.

Roles

Roles package related tasks, templates, files, and variables into reusable units. Install community roles from Ansible Galaxy:

bash
ansible-galaxy install geerlingguy.docker

Variables and Templates

Use Jinja2 templates for dynamic configuration:

yaml
- name: Deploy Nginx config
  template:
    src: nginx.conf.j2
    dest: /etc/nginx/nginx.conf
  notify: Restart Nginx

Common Ansible Use Cases

Use CaseModules
Package managementapt, yum, dnf, pip
Service managementservice, systemd
File operationscopy, template, file, lineinfile
User managementuser, group, authorized_key
Docker containersdocker_container, docker_image
Cloud provisioningec2, azure_rm, gcp_compute

Free Ansible Learning Path

  1. Install Ansible on your local machine or a VM
  2. Write basic playbooks — start with package installs and file copies
  3. Learn inventory management — static files, then dynamic
  4. Master variables and templates — Jinja2 is essential
  5. Build your first role — reusable automation
  6. Practice with real scenarios — deploy a web stack, configure monitoring
