Buildpacks vs Dockerfiles Comparison

Cloud Native Buildpacks automatically detect and build your app without a Dockerfile. Compare Buildpacks and Dockerfiles for build speed, security.

Dockerfiles give you full control over image builds. Buildpacks detect your app type and build the image for you. The tradeoff is control versus convenience.

What Buildpacks Do

bash
# Install pack CLI
brew install buildpacks/tap/pack

# Build without a Dockerfile
pack build myapp --builder paketobuildpacks/builder-jammy-base

# That's it. No Dockerfile needed.

Buildpacks examine your code, detect the language (Node.js, Python, Go, Java, etc.), install dependencies, compile if needed, and produce an OCI image.

A Node.js project with a package.json gets detected automatically:

===> DETECTING
paketo-buildpacks/node-engine 3.1.0
paketo-buildpacks/npm-install 1.4.0
paketo-buildpacks/npm-start 1.1.0

===> BUILDING
Installing Node.js 20.11.0
Running npm install

Equivalent Dockerfile

The same Node.js app with a Dockerfile:

dockerfile
FROM node:20-slim AS deps
WORKDIR /app
COPY package*.json ./
RUN npm ci --production

FROM node:20-slim
WORKDIR /app
COPY --from=deps /app/node_modules ./node_modules
COPY . .
EXPOSE 3000
CMD ["node", "server.js"]

This is a good Dockerfile. Many production Dockerfiles are not this clean — missing multi-stage builds, running as root, including dev dependencies, using latest tags.

The Rebase Advantage

Buildpacks separate your app layers from the OS layer. When a base OS vulnerability is patched:

bash
# Rebase — swap the OS layer without rebuilding the app
pack rebase myapp

# Takes seconds, not minutes
# App layers are unchanged
# Only the OS layer is replaced

With Dockerfiles, you rebuild the entire image, re-download dependencies, and re-run tests. With Buildpacks, rebase swaps the base layer in seconds.

When Dockerfiles Win

Custom System Dependencies

dockerfile
FROM python:3.12-slim
RUN apt-get update && apt-get install -y \
    libpq-dev \
    ffmpeg \
    imagemagick

Buildpacks handle common dependencies but struggle with unusual system packages.

Precise Layer Control

dockerfile
# Copy only what changes least frequently first
COPY go.mod go.sum ./
RUN go mod download
COPY . .
RUN go build -o app

Dockerfile layer ordering is explicit. You decide what gets cached and what triggers rebuilds.

Multi-Service Images

dockerfile
FROM nginx:alpine
COPY --from=builder /app/dist /usr/share/nginx/html
COPY nginx.conf /etc/nginx/nginx.conf

Custom base images, configuration files, and multi-stage builds with specific artifacts — Dockerfiles handle these naturally.

When Buildpacks Win

Standardization Across Teams

Every team writes Dockerfiles differently. Some are secure and efficient. Some run as root with apt-get install -y everything. Buildpacks enforce consistent, secure builds:

bash
# Every team gets the same build process
pack build team-a-app --builder paketobuildpacks/builder-jammy-base
pack build team-b-app --builder paketobuildpacks/builder-jammy-base

Reducing Maintenance Burden

Buildpacks handle: - Base image security patches (rebase) - Language runtime updates - Dependency caching - Non-root user configuration - Minimal image size

That is maintenance work you do not do.

The Practical Answer

Start with Buildpacks for standard web applications. Switch to Dockerfiles when you need: - Custom system packages - Specific base image requirements - Complex multi-stage builds - Non-standard application layouts

Many organizations use both: Buildpacks for 80% of services, Dockerfiles for the 20% that need customization.
